Most common risks associated with teeth whitening are temporary and mild and often depend on using the products according to directions.

We wanted to take a moment to talk about some of the more common risks associated with teeth whitening:

    Burning Sensation
The chemicals used in teeth whitening products are strong enough to whiten the teeth and can cause a burning sensation on soft tissues for some people, especially those who are more sensitive.

    Increase in Tooth Sensitivity
Some people who have whitened their teeth have reported an increase in sensitivity to cold air and hot or cold foods or liquids after treatment that goes away quickly, as soon as the tooth’s temperature returns to your normal body temperature.

    Tooth Enamel Damage
Erosion to the enamel of your teeth can occur when teeth whitening products are used too much. It is good to remember this when doing your own teeth whitening at home, and be sure to follow the package directions and your dentist’s advice on how often to whiten your teeth.

    Nausea
If the chemical agents used in teeth whitening are swallowed, this can cause some stomach upset or nausea. It is best to spit the excess moisture or chemicals out rather than risk swallowing them.

    Expecting or Nursing Mothers
Until it is known if the chemicals used in teeth whitening products may cause harm to your baby, it is best not to use these products if you are expecting or nursing.

These are the more common risks associated with teeth whitening. It is good to remember that there may be other risks that are specific to your own health needs and that you should discuss them with your dentist or your medical physician before having your teeth whitened.
