For some who want to whiten their teeth, using whitening products at home can be more convenient and sometimes more affordable than having the procedure done in their dentist’s office.
There are basically two kinds of teeth whitening products that can be used at home:

1. From Your Dentist

Specially prepared kits that you get from your dentist’s office that are intended for use at home. Sometimes these at home kits are used after a treatment in your dentist’s office as part of an after care maintenance routine, and sometimes they are done instead of a treatment in your dentist’s office.

Many dentists will agree that the specially prepared kits that you get from your dentist are very effective at whitening your teeth and maintaining the shade of white that you want. These treatments that you do at home can be done every four to six months, depending on what your dentist has recommended for your teeth and their unique health concerns.

2. Store Bought

Teeth whitening kits that are available in your local store. There are advantages and disadvantages to these kits and you should consult your dentist before using them.

Although store bought teeth whitening kits are not usually as strong or effective as the ones from your dentist, they are often more affordable and you don’t have to wait for an appointment with your dentist to get them. They are often easy to use and some, like the strips, can be used while you are doing other things. Overuse can cause damage to your teeth and soft tissues and even discoloration to your teeth.

To be sure that you are getting the best from your at-home whitening products, see your dentist regularly and talk to your dentist about your use of whitening products at home.
